New York Resident Charged with DUI in Bergenfield NJ

A fugitive from New York has been arrested by the Bergenfield New Jersey Police Department after he apparently fled from a minor motor vehicle accident. The defendant has since been arrested and charged with DUI, driving while suspended, driving without insurance and leaving the scene of an accident. It was not until the officers had the defendant in custody that they realized he was a wanted man from New York. Apparently the defendant had violated his parole and has since been on the run.

The defendant, who is a twenty-eight year old New York resident, was pulled over by Marc Rispoli a Bergenfield Police Officer moments after his van was observed sideswiping a parked car. According to the officer, he immediately detected the odor of alcohol emanating from the defendant’s breath when he approached the vehicle. In addition to the smell of alcohol, the officer also smelled the odor of burnt marijuana. As a result of his observations, the defendant was arrested and taken to headquarters, where a subsequent search incident to a lawful arrest revealed six small bags of marijuana.

In addition to the traffic charges issued out of Bergnenfield, which consist of driving while intoxicated, refusing to take a breath test, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, driving while suspended, driving without insurance, driving under the influence in a school zone, possession of drugs in a motor vehicle, the defendant has also been charged criminally with being a fugitive from justice, marijuana possession, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and lastly being under the influence of marijuana. The defendant currently being held in the Bergen County Jail on a $75,000 bail but he does also have a detainer from the New York State Parole Board.
