Jeffrey Peters, who lives in Hawthorne, New Jersey, is accused of stealing prescription drugs. Peters is also a Oradell police officer. Currently, Peters is suspended from his duties as a police officer. Allegedly, he was stealing the prescription drugs from a locked drop box. Investigators were informed of his alleged criminal activities on January 19th. The lock box is to encourage residents to drop off unwanted/unneeded prescription drugs. Peters is charged with a third degree theft by unlawful taking and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Peters first court appearance is on for February 10th at the Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.

Peters faces two serious charges. Both charges are third degree charges. Theft by unlawful taking, moveable property valued at $500-$74999, also codified as 2C:20-3A. The other charge, Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance/Analog, prescription drugs, is codified as 2C:35-10A(1). Both charges carry up to five years in New Jersey state prison, as well as up to a $15,000 fine.
