NYC Man arrested in Leonia for $50,000 worth of Cocaine
Alexander Garces Brioso, who hails from New York City, was recently arrested for distribution of cocaine. The arrest took place in Leonia, NJ on Interstate 95. Brioso, who is 39 years of age, was arrested while travelling southbound on I-95. The arrest was effectuated by detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. After stopping Brioso, law enforcement found approximately 1,000 grams of what is suspected to be cocaine.
Brioso now faces one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The charge is a first degree indictable (felony), the highest degree someone can be charged in the state of New Jersey. For now, Brioso was taken to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, NJ. There , he’ll likely await his pending release from the jail or he might be detained pending the outcome of the case.

There are factors that the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Brioso intended to distribute cocaine. These factors are the following:
- Quantity of the cocaine
- Quality or Purity of the cocaine
- If the cocaine was packaged
- The estimated value of the cocaine
- Equipment or the supplies that were found with the cocaine
- And/or the location of where the cocaine was found
For a first degree distribution of cocaine charge, the cocaine has to be five (5) ounces or more. The penalties for a first degree distribution of cocaine charge is severe. This includes:
- Up to twenty (20) years in New Jersey State Prison
- The minimum being ten (10) years in New Jersey State Prison
- Up hundred of thousands of dollars in fines and court fees
- A presumption of incarceration (meaning it is presumed if convicted that the defendant would be incarcerated)
