Eluding & DWI Charges Issued in Mahwah NJ

Jeffrey BergerA brief police chase in Mahwah, New Jersey leads to a local resident being charged with among other things, driving under the influence. Apparently the Defendant, a twenty-eight (28) year old male from Mahwah, made a sharp turn onto MacArthur Boulevard and in doing so made a loud tire screeching noise. Unfortunately for the Defendant, a Mahwah police officer was heading in the opposite direction on MacArthur Blvd. After observing the Defendant, the officer immediately turned his vehicle around and activated his sirens. For a brief second the Defendant attempted to take off, reaching speeds of up to 80 mph. However, he quickly realized that would not be a good option, especially when he noticed more then one Mahwah officer was in pursuit.

The Defendant quickly pulled over and was placed under arrest without incident. The Defendant has formally been charged with eluding, driving while intoxicated as well as reckless driving. Based on the facts of the case, the Defendant will most likely be charged with eluding in the second degree. If convicted, the Defendant is facing up to ten (10) years in a New Jersey State Prison and a fine up to $150,000.
