Bergen County Man Charged with Simple Assault & Terroristic Threats

In Hackensack, New Jersey a 35-year-old man is being charged with simple assault after an argument that he had with his children’s mother. According to police Capt. Thomas Salcedo, a 35-year-old male was arrested and charged with simple assault, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1a. It just so happens that the Defendant also serves on the city school board, therefore this matter will have to be transferred from the Hackensack Municipal Court to another municipality within Bergen County. The Defendant was also is a one-time track star for the high school in Hackensack.

According to police, they were called to a home on S. Prospect Ave. The reason for the call was a domestic dispute. The alleged victim said that she had just been attacked by the father of her children. She claimed that the Defendant not only slammed her hand into the front door, but that he had also engaged in other acts of domestic violence, some of which allegedly occurred on January 7, 2013. It appears based on the statements from the victim that the Hackensack Police Department could have charged the Defendant with aggravated assault as well.

The female victim signed multiple complaints against the Defendant, and so he was charged with two counts of simple assault and one count of making terroristic threats. He was then transported to the Bergen County Jail and bail was set at $42,500. According to the Sheriff’s office, the Defendant made bail and was released the next day. The Defendants prior criminal record is minimal, in fact the only police records consisted of petty offenses that date back to the year 2007.

If convicted of simple assault in Bergen County the Defendant could be sentenced up to six months in the Bergen County Jail on each charge. In addition, the terroristic threats charge carries without a potential for up to five years in a New Jersey State Prison since it is a third degree felony.
