River Vale, Hillsdale & Westwood NJ Police Officers involved in a Pursuit that ended in the Hakcensack River
A Rockland County New York man took several River Vale New Jersey police officers on a wild foot chase that ended up in the Hackensack River early this morning. The initial reports indicate that the aforementioned defendant was the passenger in a vehicle that found itself in a Bergen County DWI checkpoint. The River Vale officers conducting the checkpoint immediately smelt the odor of burnt marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle. Upon further questioning, they became suspicious that the passenger may have attempted to conceal the drugs by eating them and as a result the defendant was asked to get out of the vehicle for further questioning. It appears it was at this point that the defendant attempted to flee the officers and sent them on a chase that ended up with the officers capturing him in the Hackensack River.
The River Vale police have charged the defendant with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstruction the administration of justice, and being under the influence of marijuana. The driver of the vehicle has been charged with driving while intoxicated and being under the influence of marijuana as well. To make matters worse the River Vale, Hillsdale, and Westwood police officers who jumped into the river were taken to the Hackensack UMC at Pascack in Westwood New Jersey to be treated for hypothermia.
