A thirty-eight (38) year old male from Woodland Park was charged with driving while intoxicated Thursday afternoon in Fort Lee. According to the reports the Defendant was pulled over following his attempt to evade the toll at the George Washington Bridge. Once the Port Authority officers observed the Defendant driving through the EZ Pass lane without paying the toll he was pulled over. Apparently once the officers approached the Defendant’s vehicle they quickly smelled the overwhelming odor of burnt marijuana. Following a further inquire it was determined that the Defendant was under the influence of marijuana. However, it didn’t stop there for the Defendant, it was also determined that he had a $7,000 warrant for child neglect out of Hackensack as well.
The Defendant was arrested and formally charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana while operating a motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated, theft of services and several other motor vehicle violations as well. Do to his warrant the Defendant was most likely taken to the Bergen County Jail. If this is the Defendant’s first DUI offense he will be facing up to a twelve (12) month loss of drivers license, up to twelve (12) hours in the Intoxicated Drivers Resource Center and a fine up to $800. With that being said, although the penalties for a DUI / DWI offense in New Jersey are harsh, it is technically still considered a traffic offense.
