Washington Township police are investigating two separate burglaries that occurred in their town earlier this week. According to the initial reports, the police believe that the defendant burglarized a home in Washington Township and while the police were investigating that incident, he was ransacking another residence nearby. The Washington Township detectives were apparently investigating a home on Eastview Terrace late Monday night when one of the residents noticed a tall, heavyset man, running from a neighbors backyard. However, before the police could apprehend the individual, he fled in a vehicle that was parked nearby. The house that defendant was spotted in had their electric meter disabled, which in turn disabled their burglary alarm, which allowed the defendant to enter the residence without tipping the police off. The homeowners were apparently away on vacation.
In an attempt to uncover any valuables in the home, the defendant removed the mattresses, emptied everything in the kitchen drawers and cabinets. It has been reported that the defendant was only able to make off with several pieces of jewelry. If caught, the defendant will most likely be charged with two separate counts of burglary in the third degree, two counts of theft in the third degree and possible unlawful possession of a weapon if he is discovered to be in possession of the handgun which was reported stolen from the first home. A third degree felony in New Jersey is punishable by up to five (5) years in a New Jersey state prison and fined up to $15,000 dollars. The potential unlawful possession of a weapon is a second degree felony in New Jersey and it falls under what is known as the graves act. The graves act requires any defendant convicted under this act to serve a mandatory state prison term and a mandatory parole ineligibility term.
