Motor vehicle accident in Ridgewood NJ results in driver being charged with possession of Heroin and Synthetic Marijuana.
The Ridgewood Police Department has announced that it arrested a local resident, a twenty-five (25) year old male, late Sunday night for possessing a controlled dangerous substance. The reports indicate that the defendant was operating a motor vehicle within the borough when it allegedly crossed across two lanes of traffic and crashed head on into a tree on Fairfield Avenue. The defendant was immediately taken to the Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment for the injuries sustained during the crash. During a subsequent search of the defendant’s vehicle, the police uncovered what they believe to be synthetic marijuana (also known as K-2), heroin and also hypodermic needles.
It appears that this is not the defendant’s first run in with the Ridgewood Police Department. Apparently the defendant is alleged to have previously stolen approximately $400 out of a breast cancer donation jar.
The initial reports do not indicate what the defendant was specifically charged with but if it is determined that the defendant was under the influence of other a controlled dangerous substance or alcohol he could be charged with driving while intoxicated (dui) and possible even assault by auto if someone else was injured as a result of the accident. In addition, he most likely will be charged with possession of heroin a crime of the third degree and possession of synthetic marijuana a crime of the third degree as well. The defendant is also facing fourth degree felony theft charges from the alleged $400 missing from the breast cancer jar.
DWI is a serious offense in New Jersey. If convicted of a first offense dui, a defendant could lose his driving privileges for up to twelve months, fined approximately $700, sentenced to two days in jail and twelve hours in the IDRC.
