handcuffs.jpgA Belleville man has been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to a breath test, assault by auto and leaving the scene of a crash in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. Based on the reports released thus far, the Defendant, a twenty-four (24) year old male from Belleville, struck another vehicle head-on Monday evening. However, it did not end there, the police allege that following the head-on collision, the Defendant backed up and left the scene. Then to matters worse, the Defendant then struck another vehicle, this time a parked one, just several blocks away. When the police arrived on scene, the Defendant was standing next to his vehicle, which they later learned was disabled. This may have prevented a bad situation from getting much worse.

The Defendant was arrested and taken to the Hackensack University Medical Center to be treated for his injuries and intoxication. He was later taken tot he Lyndhurst Police Department where he was formally charged. Since the assault by auto in technically a felony on its face, the charges need to be sent to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for review. If the prosecutor office declines prosecution on the assault by auto charges, the entire case will be remanded back to the Lyndhurst Municipal Court.
