Two more Stores Burglarized overnight in Bergen County New Jersey
Both a Dunkin Donuts and a convenience store in Bergen County were burglarized early this morning. The Englewood Police Department has released that they have taken into custody an ex-con who they believe was behind both burglaries this morning. They believe that when the defendant was unable to obtain any cash from the Dunkin Donuts register he decided to burglarize a convenience store right down the road. According to the reports, the defendant was able to make off with several items from the store but it is unclear at this point whether or not he was able to obtain any cash from the register.
Apparently a surveillance camera was key piece of evidence that allowed the Englewood Police Department to crack the case. According to the initial reports, when the officers responded to the burglar alarm they quickly discovered that the store had installed security cameras. Once they were able to observe the footage, they were able to clearly identify the clothing which the defendant was wearing. Based on that information, they posted a be on the lookout (BOLO) for anyone matching the defendant’s description. As a result, in less than an hour after the BOLO went out, an officer spotted the defendant several blocks away. The defendant, who initial tried to give a different name, was quickly apprehended without incident according to the arresting officers.
The defendant, who has over a twenty year long rap sheet, has been charged with two counts of burglary and one count of theft of movebale property. The defendant is currently being held in the Bergen County Jail on a $24,000 bail. The two counts of burglary which the defendant has been charged with are considered third degree felonies. A third degree felony in New Jersey is punishable by up to five (5) years in a New Jersey State Prison and up to a $15,000 fine. The theft charge which the defendant is also facing will most like be a disorderly persons offense (misdemeanor) provided that the value of the items taken was less than $200. A disorderly persons offense, also know as a misdemeanor , is punishable by up to six months in the Bergen County Jail and up to a $1,000 fine. Therefore, if the defendant is convicted of all charges he could be facing more than a decade behind bars.
