Fort Lee, New Jersey is considered by many as one of the largest entrance points for drug distribution and more specifically heroin for New Jersey. This is due in large part to its close proximity to New York City. Since Bergen County as a whole has seen a huge increase in heroin overdoses, the local municipalities are on high alert for any potential heroin dealers. Two Defendant’s Charged with Heroin Distribution in Fort Lee

The Fort Lee Police Department has announced they have arrested and charged two illegal Dominican immigrants with possessing more than 3,000 decks of heroin. According to the initial reports, the Defendant’s vehicle was initially stopped for speeding and failing to maintain a lane.  After a brief conversation with the occupants the officers on scene decided to seek permission to search their car, which seems to be as a result of alleged “conflicting stories” (for more information on consent searches please click the link). During the search of the vehicle it appears that the officers uncovered a hidden compartment. Inside the hidden compartment was more than 3,000 decks of heroin, which has a street value of more than $100,000. The Defendant’s have been formally charged with possession of heroin with the intent to distribute, which due to the quantity will be a first degree charge. If convicted of a first degree heroin distribution charge, they will be facing up to twenty years in a New Jersey State Prison and a fine of up to $200,000. The Defendant’s are currently being held in the Bergen County Jail on a $50,000 bail and since they are illegal immigrants, I would assume that ICE (immigration customs enforcement) has issued a detainer on them as well, which in essence means they cannot bail out.
