The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office has announced that they have arrested and intend on prosecuting more than 325 people as a result of a joint anti-heroin initiative. Bergen County, New Jersey officials teamed up with other officials from Passaic and Morris County in effort to gain control over the recent heroin epidemic that North Jersey has been facing. According to the reports, at least 100 of 325 people charged as a result of this crackdown were allegedly local users and dealers from Bergen County, New Jersey. The majority of the other 225 arrested were from Passaic, Morris, Sussex, Hudson or Middlesex County. The initial reports released go on to state that most of the arrests mentioned above involved were either for the simple possession of heroin or the more serious charge of possession of heroin with the intent to distribute or heroin distribution. The remainder of the arrests were for eluding, child endangerment, possession of stolen property and possession crack cocaine and Oxycontin.
As a result of this joint anti-heroin initiative, local law enforcement seized 32 guns, $25,000, approximately 12,000 glassines of heroin and approximately 1,200 grams of heroin. They have approximated the street value of all of the aforesaid seizures to be almost a half-million dollars. The Bergen County Prosecutors office has been arresting and charging individuals who supply the lethal drug dose to any one of the overdose fatalities with murder, under a strict liability theory. Their office is making a strong pitch to public in an effort to make them aware that they are not sitting back and allowing this heroin epidemic to claim anymore lives.
