Heroin Addict Charged with Eluding in Ridgefield, New Jersey

It is unclear what started the chase but when the dust settled a twenty-five year old heroin addict, who is wanted by several police agencies in Bergen County, has been charged with eluding, aggravated assault on a police officer and possession of heroin. According to the reports, the Defendant dragged several Ridgefield police officers through a roadblock that was set up on Route 46 in Ridgefield. It appears that the Defendant was originally stopped at a checkpoint established by the Ridgefield police department and when they became aware that the Defendant had several active warrants, the Defendant hit the gas and took off. During the chase, the Defendant struck several other vehicles, prior to smashing into a Ridgefield police cruiser. Once the Defendant struck the police cruiser, he attempted to take off on foot, however, he did not make it very far. The Defendant was finally apprehended when several officers were able to tackle him to the ground.

The Defendant was formally charged with eluding in the second degree, aggravated assault on a police officer, hindering apprehension, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, possession of heroin in the third degree and driving while intoxicated. He is currently being held in the Bergen County Jail on a $250,000 bail.
