Local residents were forced to contend with the closure of Lemoine Avenue between Maine and Whiteman Streets on Wednesday, December 12, 2012. The reason for this avenue’s closer was because a 52-year-old Englewood Cliffs man allegedly crashed into a telephone pole late Tuesday night. According to police, the 52 year old male was allegedly driving while intoxicated while heading northbound on Lemoine Avenue around 11:45 PM Tuesday, December 11, 2012. It was then that he drove his 2004 Jeep Wrangler off of the road. This resulted in him crashing into a telephone pole. The accident caused the pole and live wires to fall down. As a result the police were forced to shut down a section of Lemoine Avenue and detour traffic. The driver of the crashed 2004 Jeep was later transported to a local hospital with non-fatal injuries.
Lemoine Avenue was closed until construction crews were able to repair the damage caused by the crash. According to Capt. Keith Bendul the repair work included replacing a pole, bringing up transformers and lines, and re-installing them on the pole. The same Fort Lee Police Department Capt. noted the effort that the Fort Lee Police Department is making to urge motorists not to drink and drive. They are doing this in a campaign called ‘’Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.’’
If this is the defendant’s first driving under the influence offense, he is facing up to a twelve month loss of his drivers license. If this is the defendant’s second dwi offense, then he could potentially lose his license for up to two years.
