2 Handguns Uncovered During Routine Traffic Stop in Palisades Park New Jersey

Two illegal handguns along with approximately $6,000 in cash was seized following a routine traffic stop in Palisades Park New Jersey.  It appears that the defendants were pulled over for failing to maintain a lane and once the officer approached the driver he indicates that he became very suspicious when all occupants of the car gave him conflicting statements. As a result he requested consent to search the car, which was later given by the driver.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed approximately $6,000 in cash, along with a Sig Sauer P228 9mm handgun and a Davis Industries P380 .380 cal. handgun, all of which were located in the trunk. All occupants denied ownership and as a result all three were arrested and charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon in the second degree. A second degree felony is punishable by up to ten (10) years in a New Jersey State Prison and it is also subject to the Graves Act. The Graves Act was instituted about nine (9) years ago, in an effort to curb gang violence. It requires that anyone convicted of the unlawful possession of a weapon be sentenced to a term of imprisonment, and a parole ineligibility term be set at 1/2 of the overall sentence or three (3) years, whichever is greater. All three defendants are currently being held in the Bergen County Jail on a $50,000 bail.
